What is a Background Check?
What is Background Check? Is it different than a pre
employment background screening? Different than a background
investigation, or a due diligence investigation? An investigation? What do these terms
really mean, and how are they different?

What should be very simple seems to
have become somewhat clouded over the years, partly because so many
people have jumped into the background search field, started companies,
begun websites, and started using different terms for different things.
This is an attempt to be as clear as possible about what terms mean, and
what means what. Please, let us know if you've found this helpful.
Reality vs. Fiction
Remember, what someone tells you or shows you is
solely a representation, not a fact, until it is verified, documented.
Someone may say they have certain assets, a certain license, education,
capability, or experience, that they are X and Y and Z. These are
representations. The reality may range from an accurate and honest
representation to slight exaggeration to total fabrication. Verification
services are designed to do just that, to verify that a representation
is, indeed, a fact, or that it is not. It may also be a purpose to
illicit what is not represented, but what is hidden, such as a criminal
record or bankruptcy. A person may represent that they have a degree
from X University, but X University records state that no degree was
ever granted. Until a representation is verified, you have no way of
knowing whether it is reality or fiction. A person may claim they have a
drivers license or a commercial drivers license (CDL), but the
verification process should show what the reality is: suspended,
multiple DUIs, etc. Without solid and reliable verification, with
whatever matter is at hand, you place yourself at some risk.
Verifications enable you to make more sound decisions.
Background Check: A check of the
background and circumstances involving a person and/or organizations,
involvements, records. A Background Check and a Background Search are
synonymous. A background check involves checking or searching
various record sources (credit agencies, licensing agencies, courts) to
verify representations or locate information regarding the subject of
the search. What is checked is not standardized, and varies from company
to company.
Pre Employment Screening or Pre Employment
Background Search, Screening, or Check: A "Pre Employment" is
a Background Check for the purposes of employment, as applied in the
process of hiring or employing. A good firm will provide this service by
aligning the services with the many laws, rules, and regulations
regarding employment, and not violate these with illegal searches or
methods that may place the employer at risk or in a liability situation.

Due Diligence, Due Diligence Investigations:
This is a background check of an individual and/or organizations that is
broader, deeper, and more far-ranging than a background check. It is a
matter of depth, detail, range, and the subject of the investigation or
target of the investigation may have more consequence or risk. a move or
a decision with some higher magnitude, importance. Please see

Employee Check, Employee Background Check,
Employee Status Update: There are these and similar terms
in use, but they all get at the same thing. People and their
circumstances change. Time goes on, and very often people do not
remain the same in time and place. It is, again, a background check
applied to recent occurrences and records (sometimes an update from
the original pre employment background check). These checks are
ordered by the employer either for suspicion or knowledge of some
wrongdoing by the employee, at specific time intervals, or based
upon an event: promotion, move or relocation, discovery of a

Investigations: In the strict definition
of the term, to provide actual investigations requires a license as an
investigator or private detective, may involve background checks in
addition to surveillance and other methods that are normally employed.
