There are these and similar terms
in use, but they all get at the same thing. People and their
circumstances change. Time goes on, and very often people do not
remain the same in time and place. It is, again, a background check
applied to recent occurrences and records (sometimes an update from
the original pre employment background check).

ordered by the employer either for:
- suspicion or knowledge of some
wrongdoing by the employee,
- at specific time intervals, scheduled, like on
anniversary dates
- Based
upon an event: promotion, move or relocation, discovery of a
theft, incident, etc.

- Vehicles, Driving, Behavior Risks: Those
who drive company vehicles or use their vehicles on organization
business may have serious driving offenses that may affect
insurance or liability issues. These offenses may occur after
being employed, ones that the organization may have no knowledge
of - usually not a viable defense. DUIs or the equivalent,
reckless operation, moving violations. A license may have been
suspended. In addition, these also may be red flags for a person
in trouble, and some troubled people do very troubling things,
and a signal to issues that should be dealt with.
- Employee Theft, White Collar Crime: Various
research studies on employee theft and white collar crime
indicate clearly that these most often occur after the employee
has been with the company for a number of years. Inside theft
and white collar crimes in general often come as a result of
long study of organization methods and processes in place. They
identify weaknesses in controls and checks and balances, and
figure out how to beat the system(s).
- Needs and Situational Change, Motivations:
When a person was first interviewed their background checks
didn't indicate any serious problems. Their life was fairly
stable, and things were good. Their work performance and their
record might be quite positive overall and for a number of
years. Some people can be quite good at hiding the fact that
some terrible things have happened to them that changes them,
how they think, feel, and then act outside of the workplace
community. Gambling. Drugs. Divorce and separation. Death.
Sickness of a loved one. Older parents with very serious
problems. Drinking. And the list of situations goes on and on,
and many of these happen to good people. What can a background
check discover? Many of the signals of these. What was good
credit is now down the tubes. Driving offenses. Court
appearances. Substantial debt. Faced with a disaster of some
magnitude, a loved one needing extensive medical care and with
no money to pay for it, can test or change what are normal
values.
- Others: There are more causal
factors, such as the erosion of ethics in general, that place
employers at risk. Even a casual reading of the newspapers will
point out people and situations and losses to employers that
stem from the social pressures of what is a changed world:
theft, embezzlement, selling trade secrets, etc. More and more
corporations and organizations are paying attention to the good
values that periodic and regular background checks or status
updates on employees can deliver. It is one way, for example, to
stem workplace violence that comes as a result of unseen
pressures in an employee's personal life. These pay.
